Pope St. Sixtus II in chains with St. Lawrence

Saint Lawrence wa one of the seven deacons in Rome during the third-century pontificate of Pope Sixtus II. He was martyred on August 10, 258, four days after Sixtus himself had been put to death by the emperor Valerian. According to the Roman Martyrology, soldiers beheaded St. Sixtus whilst he was preaching at Mass.

The children of Lawrence Whelan and his wife Anne donated this window in memory of their parents. Lawrence was a Lower Town merchant. He died August 19, 1895 and his wife, Anne Fitzpatrick died June 20, 1894.
